Summary Of AED Requirements
Physician Consultation: Anyone who owns or leases an AED must work with a licensed physician to get expert advice on choosing the AED, deciding where to store it, training potential users, establishing usage protocols, and reviewing its use.
CPR/AED Training: An individual must not operate an AED on someone else unless they have completed a training course approved by the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, or the department, covering the proper use and operation of the device.
EMS Notification: Individuals who own or lease an AED are required to inform Maine Emergency Medical Services (within the department) about the AED’s existence, its location, and the type of device they have.
Maintenance Program: Owners or lessees of an AED must ensure the device is maintained and tested according to the manufacturer’s standards and any additional guidelines set by the department
Use Notification: After an AED is used clinically, the owner or lessee must report the usage details to Maine Emergency Medical Services within the department.
