AED Requirements
Doctor’s Prescription: To get an automated external defibrillator (AED), you’ll need to have a prescription from a physician. This means a doctor has to approve it before you can buy or use one.
Training for Use: Anyone who plans to operate the AED must go through proper training. This training has to meet the standards set by the Department of Health and Human Services to make sure the person knows how to use the device correctly and safely.
Letting Emergency Services Know: If you get an AED, you’re required to inform your local emergency medical service about it. You need to tell them that you have it, where it’s located, and what type it is. If you ever move it to a new spot, you have to update them—unless the AED is being used in a private home, a health care facility like a hospital, or a doctor’s office.
Keeping It in Good Shape: The AED has to be regularly maintained and tested to ensure it works when needed. This means following the instructions provided by the manufacturer so the device stays reliable and ready for an emergency.
