Summary of Requirements:

Physician: A prescription from a physician is required to have an automated external defibrillator (AED).
CPR/AED Training: Enough employees must be trained to use an AED so that at least one trained person is available during business hours in public areas.
EMS Notification: There are no current laws requiring EMS (Emergency Medical Services) notification.
Maintenance Program: The AED must be regularly inspected, serviced, and maintained following the manufacturer’s guidelines. The battery and pads should also meet these guidelines. The AED should be stored in an easily accessible location during business hours, and its presence and location must be clearly marked.

Notification of Use: Each location must have a policy to call 9-1-1 as soon as possible when an AED may be needed to activate emergency services.
