AED Requirements Summary

  1. Supervising Doctor
    • A licensed Tennessee doctor must oversee the AED program.
    • Every time an AED is used, the doctor (or their designee) and the health department must be notified.
  2. CPR & AED Training
    • Anyone expected to use the AED must complete CPR and AED training from the American Heart Association or another nationally recognized program.
  3. Tell EMS About the AED
    • After getting an AED, you must register its location with the local emergency services (EMS dispatch) within 30 days.
  4. Keep the AED in Good Condition
    • The AED must be checked and maintained regularly, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Call 911 After Using the AED
    • If someone uses the AED in an emergency, they must call emergency services (911) immediately after.
